Steps to take if you are a victim or
witness to a hate crime:
1.
Call 402-444-HATE (4283) or 9-1-1, if it is an
emergency
2.
Immediately document the crime (who, what, when, where, how)
3.Collect
evidence related to the hate crime--save objects, take pictures, keep
writing samples or hate symbols.
4.
Make it clear to the law enforcement office that you think this was
a hate crime.
What happens once a hate crime is
reported?
In order to take legal action against offenders, each case must be reported.
Detailed and specific information received by law enforcement is recorded
and monitored. Once a tip comes into

report is filled out then a detective investigates the case. People
reporting a crime have the right to remain anonymous.
